RITES
Beginning in 2010, Neil Wood developed a body of writing and audio works gathered under the title RITES. Conceived as an exploration of voice as both medium and material, the project emerged from a search for vocal interpretations capable of extending the emotional and symbolic reach of his texts.
Part literary work, part sound installation and part mental landscape, RITES examines the capacity of spoken language to alter perception. The works frequently occupy transitional states: dusk rather than daylight, movement rather than arrival, anticipation rather than resolution. Gardens, weather systems, journeys, seasonal changes and geographical locations become stages upon which language operates as a catalyst for heightened awareness.
The title suggests both ritual and passage. Rather than describing formal ceremonies, the project focuses on small acts of attention through which everyday experience becomes charged with significance. Voice functions not merely as a vehicle for meaning but as a physical presence capable of shaping time, atmosphere and psychological space. Listening itself becomes a form of participation.
Across the series, text, sound and imagination combine to create immersive narrative environments in which memory, landscape and consciousness remain in continuous negotiation.
